Street Go-Kart Tour in Osaka: A Must-Try Adventure!

On our recent trip to Japan, we decided to embrace our inner speed demons and take part in the Street Go-Kart Tour experience in Osaka. And let me tell you—it was an absolute blast! We had the option to do it in Tokyo or Osaka, but knowing how crowded Tokyo can be, I figured it would be safer (for us and unsuspecting pedestrians) to opt for Osaka. In hindsight, I was very happy with that choice!

Of course, we had to dress the part. I snagged a Pikachu outfit, and Jorge went with Charmander—because what’s a Mario Kart-style experience without a little cosplay?

Pro Tip: Layer Up!

We went in the early evening, and let me tell you—IT. WAS. COLD. 🥶 It never crossed our minds that driving an open-air go-kart in January would turn our hands into popsicles. Learn from our mistakes and wear gloves (or at least be prepared to sit on your hands at stoplights like I did!).

How to Book & What to Expect

We booked our tour through Viator with a 5-star rated tour company. We love Viator because it offers flexible cancellations (which is super helpful when hopping between cities and plans inevitably change).

Despite arriving a little late due to travel delays, the tour company was incredibly accommodating. We messaged them as a courtesy, and they waited for us, got us through the safety video, and had us suited up in no time. The entire experience lasted Just over an hour and took us past iconic Osaka sights like:

✔️ Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Street
✔️ Dotonbori
✔️ Namba
✔️ America Mura

One downside: You don’t actually stop for photos at the landmarks. But honestly, for an experience this affordable, it makes sense. The lead driver snapped tons of photos of us throughout the tour and shared them for free afterward (which, let’s be real, is better than the overpriced photos some attractions try to sell you!).

The Serious Stuff: What You Need to Drive in Japan

To legally drive in Japan, you must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention. Here’s how it works:

  • If your driver’s license is from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, or Monaco, you need a Japanese translation of your license from the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF).
  • If your license is from China, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, etc., you cannot drive in Japan at all.
  • You must carry your physical IDP, original driver’s license, and passport at all times while driving.

How to Get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in the U.S.

In the U.S., AAA is the only official organization authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs. Be wary of online scams selling fake permits!

Applying for an IDP at AAA

🔹 In-Person Application:

  • Visit your nearest AAA branch (no appointment required at most locations).
  • Bring a completed application form (download it HERE).
  • Two passport photos (AAA can take them for $10 onsite).
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Pay the $20 application fee.

🔹 By Mail Application:

  • Send the completed application form.
  • Include two signed passport photos.
  • Provide a photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license.
  • Pay the $20 fee (some branches offer expedited services; check your local AAA office).

Permit Restrictions:

  • Valid for one year
  • Not valid for driving in the U.S.
  • Must be carried with your original U.S. driver’s license

Pro Tip: Save Money on Your IDP

🚗 If you have a AAA membership, the application fee is waived.
📱 If you’re a T-Mobile customer, you get 1-year of AAA membership for free. Just activate the offer and sign up prior to your AAA branch visit.
